The goal of this project is to develop and test the feasibility of a couples-based relapse prevention product, Relationship Recovery (RRx), for recovering female alcoholics. The RRx curriculum will focus on enabling couples to develop and practice new skills designed to repair and restore their intimate partner relationship to more effectively handle marital issues and negative emotions that may trigger relapse. For the Phase I prototype, the module scripts for the first five modules will be developed as well as the Professional Manual and all needed materials (e.g. handouts, skill aids, workbooks, etc.) for modules 1 -5. An initial test of its feasibility within two targeted markets [i.e., community and private mental health (MH) professionals] and with targeted end users (i.e., recovering female alcoholic and her partner) will be conducted. Based on Phase I findings, Phase II funding will be sought to revise and refine the product in order to maximize quality. Once finalized, a long-term scientific evaluation of the efficacy of the product will be conducted; examining changes in relationship and emotional functioning, psychosocial adjustment, and rates of relapse. It is estimated that treatment of substance abuse disorders in the United States costs $18 billion annually. Development and implementation of efficacious relapse prevention programs, such as RRx, can reduce these costs.
